MACEDON, GOLD DISTATER OF ALEXANDER III THE GREAT, Amphipolis, ca. 323-316 BC, 17.206g, 6h. Price -. Of the highest rarity, one of four known. Perfectly struck in high relief on a broad flan. Possibly the prototype of the denomination. An outstanding and fascinating distater. Good extremely fine. Former Barry Feirstein collection, Numismatica Ars Classica 2007 (39) lot 25; privately acquired from Harlan Berk
This flying Nike variety of the Alexander distater was first published by Harlan Berk. He describes Nike as being different from the usual composition because she is not standing, but appears to be either flying, or in the process of taking flight. The visual cues are stunning in their beauty, and transform the staid figure of the standing Nike type into a spirited and vigorous figure in motion, which finds a modern parallel in the famous walking Liberty of the Saint-Gaudens Double-Eagle.
